remember when i said i'd post some more of that pacific rim au someday. well apparently that day is today.

what's going on here you might ask? well tseer and wyatt ended up drifting with each other because wyatt's usual partner got injured, and they have fallen through the breach and are missing, possibly dead. THAT will be something i'll write likely after february is over because it's less shippy and more plotty

femslash february day 4: tessa/ai + under the moon + pacific rim au

Tessa finds it difficult to sleep after nights in the Drift. It isn't an uncommon side effect-- she's pretty sure Wyatt deals with it too-- but it was terribly inconvenient when all she wanted to do after a long battle was sleep and she couldn't.

In the early days she'd go for wanders around the Dome, finding nooks and crannies and hidden spots to tuck herself into for a little while. Her favorite was the roof, where she could sit and watch the few stars she could see twinkle like the world outside wasn't paying attention to what was going on in Luume.

But after a particularly harrowing drop where they'd both chased the RABIT and then watched Eldritch Blast disappear under the waves, Tseer had been so shaky and upset that he'd asked Tessa to stay with him and they'd ended up shoved into her tiny bed together, his wings wrapped around her protectively as they shared nightmares of their friends dying.

That had become their post-drop ritual. And Tessa had found her insomnia slipped away as she curled up with her partner, able to sleep with the one person who completely, totally got it.

All that's useless with Tseer fucking gone, though.

There's a yawning in Tessa's head that she can't ignore, a gap left by her missing partner that makes her feel emptier than sleep would, and she tosses and turns before groaning and shoving herself upright to stumble through the hallways.

In his lab, Orron is still awake and staring at a screen, brows furrowed. Tessa almost went to talk to him, knowing he was begrudgingly missing his labmate, but then she sees him speak sharply to no one and she backs away. At least she's not the only person suffering from a sleepless night.

There's no real destination in her head but she somehow ends up on the roof, trapdoor opening into the chilly night air. A spotlight sweeps over the city-- helicopters, searching for any sign of the wreckage of Awakening, most likely, which just makes Tessa feel a little ill.

She sees movement out of the corner of her eye and she turns in time to catch a tiny figure shoot upright. "Oh," says a voice, and Ai steps into the light. Tessa relaxes immediately, nearly slumping against the side of the trapdoor. "S-sorry. I thought no one else knew about this place 'cept me."

"I thought the same." Tessa stands awkwardly for a moment, torn between wanting to be alone and wanting Ai to stay at her side forever. She settles for, "You don't have to leave. If you don't want to." Please don't.

Ai looks a little uncertain. "I don't wanna intrude..." she says, ducking her head. "If you wanna be alone right now--,"

"No!" Tessa's hand shakes a little. "Sorry, I mean-- please don't go be-because of..." She's stumbling, and finally cuts herself off and just climbs up onto the roof of the dome.

"Okay," Ai says quietly. "I won't go."

"Thanks." Tessa wobbles over to her, sitting down and staring at her feet. Slowly, Ai sits down next to her and looks out at the city around them.

"They're..." she says, and Tessa looks over at her. "They're okay," Ai says finally. Her hand hovers in midair for a moment, before landing on top of Tessa's. "They are. I know it."

Slowly, Tessa nods. She's not sure if she believes it, but she clings to the assurance in Ai's voice like a lifeline.

The helicopter lights switch off, and Tessa looks up at the moon in time to see a meteor streak past. "Make a wish," she mumbles, and shuts her eyes. Ai squeezes her hand gently.

Tessa waits for a long moment, and then turns her hand around to interlace her fingers with Ai's. Her face feels hot, and when she looks at Ai she's staring at their clasped hands with a look of near wonderment.

She looks beautiful in the neon lights of the city. Tessa knows that she can't do anything about it right now, too untethered without Tseer to make any major life choices. But she makes a mental note to do something about it once Tseer was back.

"Hey," she says. "Do you want to go get something to drink inside with me?"

Ai takes a deep breath in, and then out. "In a sec," she says, softly. "Just wanna be here for a moment."

Tessa's heart skips a beat. "Sure," she says. "Sounds good."

(It ends up being way longer than a moment when Otto finds them both asleep on the roof the next morning, hands still clasped together.)
